our roots
The Canadian Modern Quilt Collective was started in May of 2018 by me (Amanda Brown). The Canadianmqc was created to make a gathering place where Canadian Modern Quilters could share their work, ask questions, find motivation and feel a little more connected to each other. The vision has always been to allow you and all our members to have a say in the Canadianmqc’s direction and take ownership over various parts. I may have started this but I want all of our members to feel like they are just as much the owner of it as I am.
The inspiration for starting the Canadianmqc was founded in frustration. When I first started quilting I was very lucky to find a quilt shop who taught me to quilt without fear, embraced my need to have non traditional fabrics/patterns and encouraged me (and still encourages me) to follow my quilting dreams. Talking to people all over Canada has taught me that my story may be true for many but there are also many others who have had opposite experiences. I don’t think it is any secret that the quilting world can be pretty brutal, I’m not quite sure why that is but I’ve heard (and experienced myself) many discouraging stories. I hit my breaking point when I started to hear these discouraging stories from people outside the quilting community.
Just like the ‘friendship bench’ that is gracing so many school playgrounds, I was inspired to make a safe, friendly and encouraging place for Canadian Modern Quilters to land. A place where we can share the uniqueness of Canadian quilting and the joy and struggles that go along with that. In creating this Canadianmqc I have had the opportunity and pleasure to meet (virtual and in person) so many amazing and inspiring Canadian Modern Quilters.
I have no idea exactly where Canadianmqc will go but nothing has given me more joy then discovering just how amazing our community really is.
Stay tuned and jump in!
